Handgun vs. Shotgun Stance: The Moment Everything Clicks

It happens all the time at FreeState Gun Range. A student steps up to the line with a solid grip, they’re focused and they’re doing everything they think is right. Then the first shot breaks. The gun pushes them back, their follow-up shot is slower & their confidence dips just a little. They try again… same result. And you can see it on their face: “What am I doing wrong?”

It’s Not the Gun! Here’s the part that surprises most people: It’s usually not their aim. It’s not their strength. It’s not even their experience. It’s their stance. Because stance isn’t just “how you stand.” It’s the foundation that everything else depends on. And when that foundation is off even slightly you feel it immediately.

You take a shooter working with a handgun. They’re standing a little too upright. Weight slightly back. Arms doing all the work. The recoil pushes them off balance every time. Then comes a small adjustment: “Lean forward just a bit… bring your shoulders over your hips… weight on the balls of your feet.” They fire again. This time… the gun settles faster. The sights return quicker. The second shot feels easier. You see it instantly: That moment where frustration turns into understanding.

Now take that same shooter and put a shotgun in their hands. If their stance is off the shotgun doesn’t just nudge them…It moves them. They stand too upright and the recoil drives them back. They hesitate, the muzzle rises more than they expect. And suddenly, they’re not in control anymore.

Then the correction comes: “Step forward. Lean into it. Nose over your toes. Pull the stock firmly into your shoulder.” They brace. They commit. They press the trigger again. This time… The recoil is still there, but now it’s controlled. The gun stays where it should. And instead of reacting… They’re running the gun.

Two Firearms need Two Mindsets. A handgun asks for: Balance, Efficiency, & Mobility. While a shotgun demands: Commitment, Structure, & Full-body engagement.

Same shooter. Two completely different conversations with the firearm.
